Sorry to rain on your optimism parade but global warming is unlike anything we've ever faced in the past. It requires collective and unified action on a scale never seen before which is frankly not how our brains work. We want convenience above all else, and convenience is not compatible with the low energy, high labor and boring lifestyles that would be required to truly live sustainable.

Did you know that the amount of co2 in the atmosphere didn't fluctuate by more than 100ppm for over 800,000 years. We have hard evidence on that. Moreover, that fluctuation alone was enough to cause a temperature change of 6 degrees. Indeed, 100,000 years ago Greenland had no ice sheet and there's vegetation in the relevant ice cores that proves this. This happened with a lower atmospheric co2 rate than we have today.

Now we are at more than 100ppm OVER the previous historical maximum. The ocean has been doing a great job of absorbing the staggering energy we are pumping into the system (which is the same as detonating an atomic bomb every second by the way) but the ice is most certainly melting, and at an ever increasing rate, and when the ice is gone you can guess where all that heat energy is going.

So, we are headed into a future where vast slabs of earth are under water and it's much hotter and there's frequent floods and fires. This means many many refugees, hunger and huge social stress. So, wars.

Russian is showing us how energy dependent we are on foreign nations. Many countries simply don't have the capacity, resources or land to generate the amount of energy needed by our modern lifestyles.

Indeed, this winter is going to be illuminating.
