I think there's another big factor regarding house prices. Around the same time (early 1970's) the percentage of women in the workforce started growing quickly, eventually flattening out by around 2005. The effect of this was a gradual influx of available family capital, pushing up house prices and changing that single earner ratio for obvious reasons.
