I think it has everything to do with economics. Do you think the aboriginal people of Australia who lived in perfect harmony with the land for 40,000 years were concerned with ecomics? Nope. And actually, aboriginal culture had a reverence and deep respect for the land and the animals in it. I agree that the underlying system (capitalism, communism, facisms) doesn't matter, if the system says we should dig up the ground and profit from burning and processing, the rest as they say is history.

It's not our fault, I agree with you that we had no instruction manual and are fumbling in the dark. It's not wrong that we gravitated towards security, warmth, joy and convenience. We have done truly amazing things.

But the outcome of just a few thousand years of this productivity is the same and I think evitable, regardless of the system. You cannot relentlessly pollute the sky, earth and sea at this scale and expect to have a beautiful and hospitable place to live. And you cannot watch species after species die with wonton indifference and expect dinner to continue being on your plate.
